There are three main compartments in the knee: the medial, lateral and patellofemoral compartments. One or more compartments may be affected by arthritis with time. Depending on which stage of the arthritis you present with, there are a number of options available including a partial (or “unicompartmental”) knee replacement or a total knee joint replacement.

If you have persistent pain and stiffness in the knee despite taking pain-killers, trying physiotherapy and/or trying to lose weight, then a total or unicompartmental knee replacement may be an option for you. The arthritic joint or compartment is removed and replaced with a metal prosthesis, with a hard-wearing plastic liner in between.

Mr Jesani will be happy to discuss the management of your knee arthritis, as well as discuss potential risks and expected outcomes following a total/partial knee replacement, at your next consultation.
